Lesson 4

The Earth

We live on planet Earth. The surface of the Earth is covered with land and water.
The land is made up of continents and islands. Continents are large areas of land. Islands are land surrounded by sea.

Most of the Earth is covered with water. This water forms the seas and oceans. There is also water on the continents and islands, in rivers and in lakes.

The Earth is surrounded by a layer of air called the atmosphere. This is where clouds form.

The Sun

The Sun is a star. It's not even a particulary big one- it only seems bigger and brighter than other stars because it's much closer to us. But it's still about a million times bigger than the Earth.
Like every other star, the Sun is an unbelievably hot ball of burning gases, which are squased together, causing explosions which produce light and heat.
Life on Earth is possible thanks to the light and heat from the Sun.

The Moon

The Moon is the natural satellite of the Earth that orbits around the Earth.
The Moon does not give off light. It looks bright because it reflects light from the Sun.
We can see the Moon during the day and during night, but we can see it better at night.
